Many people end up not undergoing root canal therapy because they’re afraid of the pain that they think it’ll cause. To help people overcome this anxiety, many practices will offer some form of dental sedation. But the question is, will you really need it? Keep reading in order to learn more about what you can expect during a root canal in Saratoga and whether you’ll want to be sedated during the process.

Why are Root Canals Performed?

An unfilled cavity or a severe crack can expose the nerves and tissues that a tooth contains to infection. Your body won’t be able to fix the problem on its own, and eventually the tooth might need to be pulled. But luckily, root canal therapy will let you avoid an extraction while stopping the infection from getting any worse. Your endodontist will create a hole in the enamel, remove the infected tissues, clean out the inside of the tooth, and place a crown to protect the area.

Will You Need Sedation to Manage Your Pain During a Root Canal?

You’ll probably be worried about pain during the root canal process, but the truth is you may not even need sedation to help you stay comfortable. Thanks to a local anesthetic, the affected tooth and the nearby gums will be numbed while the treatment is performed. Because of this, you likely won’t feel any pain at all – at the very least, you can expect no more discomfort than you would experience when receiving a filling.

So When Will Sedation Be Recommended?

Of course, some patients will still be anxious about receiving any kind of dental care at all, or they might have difficulty sitting still for long periods of time. If either of those describe you, you could benefit from seeing a sedation dentist in Saratoga for your root canal therapy. Of course, the final decision is up to you.

What Kind of Sedation is Available?

Depending on how severe your dental anxiety is, your endodontist in Saratoga might offer a few different kinds of sedation.

  • Nitrous Oxide: For very mild cases, you’ll breathe in a colorless gas through a nasal mask that will keep you relaxed. The effects will wear off almost instantly once the mask is removed.
  • Oral Conscious: You’ll take a pill about an hour before the procedure. When it takes effect, time will seem to pass by very quickly, and you may not even remember the procedure.
  • IV Sedation: The sedative will be injected into the bloodstream and will take effect very quickly. This treatment is recommended for especially fearful patients.

Your endodontist will work with you to figure out which type of sedation, if any, will be the best option for helping you stay at ease during your treatment. Remember, getting a root canal could be extremely important for your oral health; don’t let your fear keep you away from the office!
